The town of Amble in Northumberland has been known as the friendliest port for many years. Originally a tiny hamlet, storms in 1764 damaged the coast and the river Coquet burst its banks allowing the town to grow into a major port for coal, shipping and fishing.
Amble today is a thriving town with an extensive marina and has a variety of clubs for fishing, boating, sailing, angling and canoeing.
If you wish to charter a boat for reef and ground fishing, there are a number of local companies in Amble.
Boat trips can be taken to Coquet Island, a lighthouse station just off the coast. The island is a birdwatcher’s paradise. One of the original lighthouse keepers was William Darling, brother of the infamous Grace Darling.
South of Amble is Druridge Bay – six miles of beautiful beaches and sand dunes.
Whether you want a relaxing break, bird watching or a day of fishing, you will be spoilt for choice in Amble, Northumberland.
